The academic degree of Candidate of Science can be applied for by persons with a higher professional education. Unenrolled postgraduate students can be assigned to the University for a term not exceeding two years for the purpose of passing the qualifying examinations for the Candidate's degree and for a term not exceeding three years for the purpose of dissertation development. The total duration for the assignment of an unenrolled postgraduate student does not exceed five years. The academic degree of Doctor of Science can be applied for by persons with the academic degree of Candidate of Science. The term of assignment of unenrolled doctoral students for the purpose of doctoral dissertation development does not exceed four years.
2. In the case of a permanent ISAW faculty member who retires or accepts a position elsewhere, ISAW considers the departing faculty member to be qualified as a full-time ISAW faculty member for the purpose of dissertation supervision and examination until the faculty member's advisees have completed their dissertations. If a faculty member is not already on a student’s committee, they may be added and counted as a full-time ISAW faculty member within five years from the date the faculty member severs ties with ISAW and serve until the dissertation is completed.
Purpose of dissertation proposal hearings
If very little literature exists, the wise student will write, in effect, a several-paragraph book report by citing the purpose of the study, the methodology, the findings, and the conclusions. If there is an abundance of studies, cite only the most recent studies. Firmly establish the need for the study. Defend the methods and procedures by pointing out other relevant studies that implemented similar methodologies. It should be frequently pointed out to the reader why a particular study did not match the exact purpose of the dissertation.
