The Program encourages dissertation topics that combine scholarly rigorousness with interdisciplinary and experimental creativity, as is apparent from ourlist of recent graduates, their job placements and dissertation topics[hyperlink]. In their third year in the Program, each student forms a dissertationcommittee. With the advice of the committee, the student articulates a pre-dissertation bibliography, which he or she studies during the course of theacademic year. The pre-dissertation bibliography assembles the primary and secondary materials out of which the dissertation will coalesce. It shouldinclude the major literary and cultural works in the period(s), genre(s), or field(s) and particular theoretical and methodological texts relevant to thestudent's developing focus of research. In the second semester of the third year, students enroll in a dissertation prospectus workshop and develop theirprospectus in consultation with their committee. The prospectus must be approved by the dissertation committee and the graduate chair before the conclusionof the third academic year. The fourth and fifth years in the Program are devoted to focused work on the dissertation. Dissertation committees must includeat least one member of the Comparative Literature Graduate Group [hyperlink], but may include any other members of the permanent faculty of the Universityof Pennsylvania as well as up to one faculty member from another institution.
The Electronic Theses and Dissertations Bibliography includes selected English-language articles, books, conference papers, technical reports, unpublished e-prints and other scholarly textual sources that are useful in understanding electronic theses and dissertations. The bibliography does not cover digital media works (such as MP3 files), editorials, e-mail messages, interviews, letters to the editor, presentation slides or transcripts, or weblog postings.
